Coaching a behavior instead of a personality
Feedback is easier to use when it identifies something the rep can practice.
A practical approach
Describe the observed behavior, its effect and the alternative you want to see. Replace labels such as careless with a specific omission in a note or handoff. Ask the rep to explain how they will apply the change. Follow up on the behavior in a later example rather than assuming one conversation completed the coaching.
Put it into practice
- Describe what you observed
- Choose a practicable alternative
- Review a later example
