Explaining a metric change to the team
Changing a definition can make performance appear to improve or decline even when behavior stayed the same.
A practical approach
Document the old and new definitions, the effective date and the reason for the change. Avoid comparing the two periods without context. Preserve historical reporting where practical and label any recalculation. Give reps an example so they understand how future activity will be counted.
Put it into practice
- Document both definitions
- Label the effective date
- Explain comparisons carefully
